Game 65: A’s vs. White Sox

Game Notes:

A.J. Griffin (5-4) vs. Hector Santiago (1-4)

11:10AM @ U.S. Cellular Field

As noted by Rick Tittle this morning on the Dugout Show on 95.7 The Game, Griffin has never faced the White Sox. The A’s will be looking to make it three out of four in Chicago, and to give Bob Melvin a win on the day in which he celebrates his two-year anniversary as manager of the club.

  1. Yesterday afternoon the A’s dropped their first game of the season to the White Sox. Sean Doolittle has now let in 10 runs over the past 3.1 innings after allowing two in his first 23.1 innings.
  2. John Hickey reported that Chris Young still has the confidence of Melvin who believes that the outfielder’s “talent level is going to take over.”
  3. The A’s selected 42 players in the 2013 draft including 23 pitchers, six catchers, six infielders and seven outfielders.
  4. Hiro Nakajima had last night off, but Jemile Weeks was 3-for-5 with a pair of triples and Grant Green was 4-for-5 with three runs. In his past three games Weeks is now 9-for-15 with six runs while Green has strung together four straight multi-hit games.
  5. Melissa Lockard reported that the team has acquired Sacramento-native Vinnie Catricala from Seattle. The third baseman, who was the Mariners Minor League Player of the Year in 2011, is hitting .253 in Double-A.
  6. On this day in 2002 the A’s the bullpen coughed up a five-run lead in the top of the eighth inning after Tim Hudson had allowed one run over seven innings. Miguel Tejada, however, hit a leadoff home run off of Octavio Dotel in the bottom half of the inning to give the A’s a 7-6 win.

Game 61: A’s vs. Brewers

Game Notes:

Bartolo Colón (6-2) vs. Yovani Gallardo (4-5)

11:10PM @  Miller Park

Colón takes the mound in the final game in Milwaukee on this seven game road trip. When asked about the potential of another suspension for Cólon manager Bob Melvin said “I think he’s already paid his dues, right?” Cólon tossed a five-hit complete game in his last start and has won each of his past three outings.

  1. The A’s dropped the second game of the series 4-3 to the Brewers. Sean Doolittle allowed three runs on four pitches, and has now given up seven runs in his last three outings. Before that stretch, however, Doolittle had allowed two runs all season, with the last coming on April 28. Melvin told Jane Lee that he is “sticking with him” in the setup stop despite his recent struggles.
  2. Céspedes launched two home runs and now has 11 on the season.
  3. John Hickey noted that the A’s are due to face a slew of lefties in Chicago.
  4. Hiro Nakajima had the day off yesterday for the River Cats. Sacramento plays at 7:05PM in Tucson.

Parker has thrown four straight quality starts, the A’s have won 13 of 15 and are on the verge of sweeping the White Sox.

  1. Josh Reddick was taking all the way as he earned a walk-off walk. Reddick has now provided the game-winning RBI in both of the games he has played in since coming off the DL.
  2. Dan Straily picked up 8 K’s over 6 innings, and has now allowed just two runs during his last three starts, a stretch of 19 innings.
  3. The A’s collected 16 hits last night. Jed Lowrie had 4, and Seth Smith was the only starter without a hit.
  4. Hiro Nakajima picked up 2 hits last night for a third straight game as he played short and was 2-for-5 with a run scored. He’s now hitting .317 through 20 games and 82 at bats for the River Cats. Bob Melvin said that Nakajima is “certainly putting himself in position” for a recall.
  5. Susan Slusser reported that Brett Anderson has begun to throw, kind of. The lefty has been throwing off one knee, and is scheduled to be re-evaluated on June 14.

  2. Josh Donaldson is hitting .389 in the last 10 games as he continues to make his case for a trip to New York.
  3. John Hickey reported that Hiro Nakajima’s legs are fully healthy, but that he needs to start hitting if he’s going to get recalled.  After 9 games Nakajima is currently 8-for-35 (.229). Bob Melvin had said the short stop was likely to get “60-65” plate appearances when he begin his rehab stint with the River Cats.
